Learn how to DJ

Whether you want to learn how to DJ in order to play in local venues, or whether you want to be able to travel the world and DJ professionally - everyone has their own motives and aspirations.

Where can I start?

If you have some spare money, you can buy your own DJ controller for less than £100 which will allow you to be able to play around and work out how to mix track together and learn how to use different controls. Below is an example of a low cost controller which does everything you need when you're getting started. (We are not getting sponsored by this example - we just find that it's a low cost controller and useful for complete beginners).

You can pay hundreds or even thousands of pounds for an expensive controller which gives you more effects and features, but when you're just starting to learn how to DJ you don't need expensive equipment. You just need to learn the basics of how to mix from one track to another - which you can easily do with the controller shown above.

Get the software

You may be thinking "What DJ software is best" when it comes to learning how to DJ. However, you can choose between various different types of DJ software and they all allow you to mix tracks together, are compatible with most DJ controllers and let you use different effects such as reverb, echo and delay.

Some examples of popular DJ software packages are Serato and Virtual DJ which include free trials too - meaning you can try them before paying anything for them.

Get DJ lessons

So by this point, you may have a DJ controller and the software. The next step is to get DJ lessons from a professional who can actually teach you how to blend tracks together and point you in the right direction based on your style of music. Music genres have different patterns and structures so it's important that you learn how to mix the type of genre that you'd like to play as a professional DJ (if that's your goal).

Here at Master The Kick, you can learn how to DJ via live courses where you can see over the instructor's head (being able to see the decks from their perspective) while they're demonstrating professional techniques. If you're a complete beginner and haven't got the software or a controller, that's fine - you can still learn and ask the instructor anything you like while watching them teach you how to DJ.
